Now that it’s getting late and most people are heading off to bed I’m going to crow just a little bit about my alma mater.

A tiny, underfunded, university that most sports announcers struggle to even pronounce the name of correctly, located in small working-class city managing to be ranked #1 in the country blows my mind whenever I think of it.

GO ZAGS

We shall see how they do. They’re highly ranked every year but largely fall short of tournament expectations.

An apologist piece written by a Gonzaga fan about Gonzaga’s shortcomings somehow being not Gonzaga’s fault.

In the same article, it complains about seeding (being a #8 and being sent to a #1 for slaughter) but then calls their loss AS a #1 seed to a #9 Wichita State as justifiable? NO.

Wichita State also beat Ohio State (who was an even higher seed) and went to the Final Four that year and they had to make something like 14 3-pointers to beat GU. GU has had clunker tournaments, how they lost to fucking Wyoming I’ll never know, but they’ve also been beaten by teams like the Steph Curry led Dayton that were underrated. They’ve lost to a bunch of teams that ended up going to the Final Four and winning the championship too. http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/tournament/history/_/team1/6058

Remember, though, we are not talking about a school like Duke (who have also had clunker tournaments) that has a bazillion dollar endowment and history going back 70 years, or a state school the size of UW that has deep pocketed alumni coming out of their ears. We are talking about a Jesuit university with an undergrad population of around 5,000 in a city that isn’t exactly a dream destination and made their first ever tournament appearance in 1995 and didn’t win their first tournament game until 1999. We are just now starting to get the McDonalds All-American type recruits that fill teams like Kentucky. Hell, UW probably still out-recruits GU. If some team gets hot and beats them in the tournament, that’s just the way it goes. I’m still astonished by what they’ve become.
